Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
